The Fantastic Four had a not so fantastic second weekend dropping a whopping 65% to place number three with an estimated $20.2 million bringing its domestic total just shy of the $100 million mark with $97.6 million. It just missed the second spot behind new release 1408 starring John Cusack which pulled in an estimated $20.1 million.
Final estimates may give the fantastic foursome the edge they need to take the number two spot, but they would still be a distant second to Evan Almighty. The Steve Carell starrer brought in an estimated $32.1 million for the number one spot, though it fell quite short of its Jim Carrey starring predecessor, Bruce Almighty which brought in $67.9 million in its opening run.
The only other wide release for the weekend, the Angelina Jolie drama A Mighty Heart, failed to click with audiences placing tenth with an estimated $4 million.
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver will have even stiffer competition this week as the action sequel Live Free or Die Hard starring Bruce Willis and the Disney/Pixar animated feature Ratatouille hit theaters on Wednesday and Friday respectively.
